Community Radio :

In the absence of coverage of issues of importance of the poor in their dialects in the mainstream media there was absolute need for establishment of alternative media. Community Radio was for the first time established by AID in the state of Jharkhand in local dialect of Magahi with its most popular radio production "Chala Ho Goan Mein" (Come lets go to the village) which is still most sought after program after 15 years of its inception.

Mainstream media had limited reach out to the issues reflecting the concerns of the poor and also in local dialects. Print media had limited relevance to the regions due to rampant illiteracy in the region. Though media is a strong force to influence governance system , there was little space for the rural poor to make their views heard. There was an immense need for alternative media and AID took the initiative to start community radio programs in the regions of Jharkhand, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. It started with local dialect of Magahi in the most popular community radio program till today "Chala Ho Goan Mein"( Come lets go to the village). Immense success of this program led to production of community radio programs in tribal dialects of Oraon,Mundari, Ho and Santhali, followed by mainstream languages of Bengali, Odia and Telugu. The uniqueness is production of the episodes with participation and planning by the local communities and they determining the priorities of their issues for broadcast in their own voices and dialects.

The power of radio is being used for learning, sharing, networking, solidarity building, exercising the democractic right to information and various rights and entitlements.
