Community Takes Over The Health Programs :

AID had run reproductive health programmes in Omalur block of Salem district in T.Nadu in two phases between 1995-2000. The emphasis of the whole programme was to reduce the fertility rate by adopting to various family planning measures according to the people’s choice. Further the programme also addressed the crucial issues of early marriage, unsafe abortion and female infanticide through various campaign activities. The entire block was covered and each panchayat had a nodal center managed by the community worker who was part of the same panchayat. This nodal center was utilized for immunisation of both mother and child, counselling for family planning and other reproductive health matters such as HIV/AIDS, STD and infertility.

In the long run the community forums themselves should carry the goal of the programme being these initial efforts forward. In the process of 5 years of efforts at least 162 women groups were formed and they were trained in various aspects of health, social and economical issues. Now these activities have been slowly transferred to the women groups and they are able to manage to both run the group activities revolving around not only thrift and credit but also integrating the socio-economical and health issues into the various agendas of the groups.

The active collaboration of youth groups and the adolescent girl groups is one of the highlights of the community participation in management of the Family Resource centers. The Youth group members in some panchayats have acquired books and created a library in the FRC and wherein in the night hours the youth and the adults in the village are utilising these centers. The youth groups and the adolescent girl group members are also involved in distributing prizes to students who excel in studies, conducting health quiz and debates. Maintaining clean surroundings and advocating hygiene both at the personal and the community level. They collaborate with the women group members in all activities of the resource center and also in distributing medicines and condoms.

Rajammal had three deliveries and 2 girl children and 1 boy child. She wanted to undergo family planning operation but was afraid to approach the hospital and the doctors therein. The women group’ s president Annammal came to her rescue and took her to the doctor. The doctor advised operation after three months, as she was very anemic. Further she advised temporary contraception as well. Annammal advised Rajammal and her family to ensure proper intake of nutrition and four months thereafter she underwent tubectomy. Throughout this period the women group gave moral support to Rajammal. Now She is one of the active peer educator who has taken upon the task of educating the women to limit their families and that her personal experience showed that there was no difficulties in the operation and thereafter.
