Education for Carpet Working Children :

Garwah district in Jharkhand has high intensity of working children in carpet sector. It is eedu2-minstimated at least 11000 children are working in the carpet sector alone in this district. As they are involved in carpet weaving right from very early age they are denied the opportunity to attend the schools. Majority of the children have never knocked at the doors of the schools and are totally lost their childhood.

To enable the carpet working children to educate themselves while they continue their work has been one of the main emphasis in this program.

Non-formal education along with health and recreational activities are being carried out in this program. This program is in its fifth year of operation and so far 2034 children have directly benefitted from this program.

The positive fallout of this program has been creation of Kalin Bal Mukthi Vahini – Carpet child labourers liberation forum wherein the carpet working children have now formed a district level federation to fight for their rights and at the same time to ensure that the parents don’t send their sibling to the carpet weaving as well.

The students from these education centers are enrolling in the community college and some have left the carpet vocation and continuing their regular studies in the schools.
