Rural livelihoods are diversified and they are dependent on seasonal forest produce and agriculture production for their sustenance. Agriculture and Forestry are the key livelihood pathways in most of the rural hinterlands and tribal hamlets. Their lives and livelihoods are intertwined and dependant on the abundance of these sectors. In the absence of any other sustained livelihoods, the key for survival is their extreme dependence on agriculture and forest based livelihoods.

Agriculture is the main livelihood of the poor in Jharkhand and it is dependent heavily on vagaries of the nature. Though forest protection has been the community owned and driven concept, due to various factors it is waning away. It is important that the forest is protected and the livelihoods of the poor sustained. NTFP are important sources of livelihoods for the forest dwellers of the eastern zone. Management and trade of NTFP and enabling them to sell it at higher price during non-season by provding micro credit and created buffer systems and enabling them to store in large quantities during the season are some of the important strategies adopted by AID. Promotion of Lac cultivation, Tassar prdocution, Tamarind collection, Mahua collection, Sal seeds and tendu leaves are some of the important strategies on working on livelihoods among the tribals and the marginalised poor.

In the tribal regions of Eastern India there has been long traditional practice of community based forest governance. But due to the weakening of this system, deforestation was on the increase which is one of the reasons for loss of local livelihoods. We are enabling the local communities to get over the lost grounds and to strengthen their community governance systems so that the forests and the livelihoods are safeguarded. Be it tamarind, mahua, or other forest produce collection, lac or tassar cultivation, the community’s needs for scientific training inputs have resulted in better yields and revival of the traditional livelihoods which were waning away.

Training of the farmers using digital and ICT infrastructure, establishing agriculture knowledge centres, providing value added and need based agricultural information and services, aggregation of agricultural and forest produces and linking with e commerce portals are under way in the regions.

One of the key outcomes and achievements of livelihood over three decades is that it has successfully demonstrated the blending of traditional wisdom / knowledge with modern and scientific knowledge, skills and eco-technologies based on the acquired organisational skills and empowerment of the tribal communities
